Wood flooring has a great look and feel about it, but if you have never had it laid in your home before you may have some questions about what to choose, how to lay and care for it once it is in. Fortunately, Adamms Flooring Warehouse in North Shields has been selling and fitting wood flooring to North East homes for decades, and at the best prices!

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked by our North East customers about the different types of wood flooring:

  1. What is Laminate Flooring?

Lots of our Newcastle customers are interested in laminate flooring but are not sure what it is. Laminate flooring is simply a fibreboard plank that has been compressed and is covered with an image of wood under a protective coating. It can be made to look like any type of wood as any image can be used. You can get very cheap laminate flooring which can update your home for a very low price. More expensive laminate flooring has bevelled edges, more interesting features and looks more realistic as it uses a move varied set of images making it look natural with more texture. Laminate flooring can be used anywhere in the home, some types of laminate flooring include waterproofing and so can be used in bathrooms and kitchens.  Laminate flooring is also a popular choice for Newcastle shops as it is quick and cheap to install and replace.

  1. What is Engineered Wood Flooring

While laminate flooring is used mainly for our Newcastle customers who are on a budget, need a quick update or regularly change their décor, engineered wood flooring is a little more expensive and looks more solid than laminate wood flooring. Engineered wood flooring is made up of several layers of thinner wood to create a solid engineered plank. The layers are glued together at right angles to create a strong structure. These engineered planks are then finished with a real wood veneer which means they can be sanded and finished a few times over.  Engineered wood should not be used in bathrooms or kitchens as if exposed to humidity they may warp and is more difficult to lay than laminate wood flooring although it often gives a better real wood finish.

  1. What is real wood flooring?

Real wood, or solid wood flooring is exactly what it sounds like – solid planks of wood that have been cut specifically to be used as flooring. A favourite of Newcastle customers as we have a lot of Victorian style homes. Each of these flooring boards is made from a single piece of wood and is often thicker (and so provides a nice solid feel and more insulation) than laminate or engineered wood. It looks amazing when laid correctly and as it is real wood it can be sanded and finished over and over again as your choice of décor changes your floor can change with you. This means that although it is the more expensive option if you are planning to stay in your home for many years or are buying a property as a long term investment real wood flooring could in the long term be the most economical choice. It is also a feature many buyers look for when buying or letting a home.
